Picked up this blade in rough condition recently. Just wanted to see if there might be anything special about it before I trade it on.

It is Mumei. It has a blade length of 27” and a weight of 789 grams.

Really just trying to determine if it is a Shinto piece or maybe an older osuriage sword.

thanks!

Hi,

Looks like modern replica, not Nihonto.

It came with some, what I believe to be, legit Edo period koshirae. So I’m leaning towards it being a nihonto. Just not a very well cared for one.

Well I’ll have a go…..looks old, terribly mistreated, suriage at both ends (kissaki looks totally wrong), small chips to the ha, signs of mounting (habaki shadow), nakago looks it’s been gone over with a dremmel…..but with that sugata I’d say old  but ruined if the kissaki is as bad as it looks in the pic. Any sign at all of a boshi?

If It is modern someone has gone to a lot of trouble for not much point.

No sign of Boshi. Came without  a saya so the kissaki has probably been abused for the past 50 years.

Would like to hear more expert opinions than mine because mine is basically worthless - but I’d go for Koto, ruined, trade it on.

Hi,

I'm not an expert and my opinion doesn't matter but what looks to me as Chinese replica alike are Kissaki/Yokote, Hamon, Nakago.

Maybe keep the pictures coming. Any spot on blade where Hada can be seen?

The damage of the KISSAKI looks repairable to me. The NAKAGO was probably treated with an angle-grinder, not a DREMEL. The NAKAGO-ANA look drilled and more recent, but the overall shape - shallow KOSHI-ZORI - is not too bad. But the photos are, and I would not venture a guess based on these. It could be anything from KANBUN to SHOWA in my opinion.

Jonathan, out of focus photos (KISSAKI!) do not help the identification! You used a dark background which is good. Now take photos of the NAKAGO always vertical, tip upwards, light from the side, and present the photos as cut-outs, with almost no background to be seen. Magnification is important to see details.

That would be helpful.
