Help wanted on learning Tsuba. A fake?

Did it Dale, it sticks.

Metal (Iron with rests of black paint?)

weight 50 gram

I will try to get some of the white stuff off...

I used a soft toothbrush for 30 seconds and some warm water and it came off quite easely.

I made pics before and after of my Suriage "Batman" Tsuba.

Kind regards

Sebastien, any idea how that white stuff came on your Tsuba?

Was your father renovating his house?

Why do you keep calling me Sebastien? :)

I have no idea. I don’t even know how that tsuba ended up in Belgium. See, i found a pile of shipwreck tsuba in an auction. Most of them were rusted very badly, but a few of them were ok..and this was in that pile..

I gave them away to some friends, for free..so i don’t know how it ended up in Belgium. Also, there was no white paint on it..who ever got it must have cleaned it with something very roughly, tried to remove the lacquer on it.

Thanks Okan,

That explains a lot.

It is a small "Tsuba world" after all...

Could indeed be some rests of a chemical cleaning product.

It also explains the water damage on "the Invincibility Tsuba" (see hereunder from the same pile),which was discussed before with Dale and Piers . (3rd top left on your pic)

So Piers was right about the water damage and Alan Morton is probably right about the fire damage if the ship went down in flames.

And Dale was right about the Yoshiro 'Mon' who probably were melted out or fell out caused by the temp differences.

Kind regards.

Hi Okan,

Any idea where this ship sunk?

Remember where the auction was or other details?

This could be interesting.

Kind regards.

I did my own research at the time but couldn't find any useful information to trace it back.

I must say this thread has been an enjoyable and educational read. Coming into the thread I would never have thought a tsuba like this one was authentic.

The idea that an oddly shaped tsuba like this one could have been authentic and modified in such a significant way never even crossed my mind.

Hi Paris, I notice the "explorative" drill hole has started to darken up and gain some patina since Okan had it, we won't ever know why it was drilled but it will always be another intriguing mystery about this guard, the speed in which it has changed colour would suggest it was drilled not that long before Okan had it?

Hi Dale,

I know his pics seemed from 2022. So that is 2 years.

I do not know when he obtained it and where (from which country) the auction was.

Okan should know that.

Maybe someone tried to see if there was any value metal inside?

Kind regards
