Kantaro Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 Well i do not want to know your Birthday because that is sensitive info. If you are 43 you say 40+ if you are 74 you say 70+. Kind regards. Quote
George KN Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 25+ (coincidentally this is the only place on the internet where I regularly feel underqualified, and at times, downright stupid ) 1 Quote
GeorgeLuucas Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 30+ From my perspective, the community is an older crowd. There’s more and more young folk getting into it though! 3 Quote

One day I think more of the anime crowd will realise that you can buy actual Nihonto for cheaper than some cosplay items, and then I think we'd see a whole lot more new (and likely younger) people... Hopefully then prices will increase too - you really shouldn't be able to buy these historic pieces cheaper than a second hand car... 2 Quote
GeorgeLuucas Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 Just got home from the SF sword show, and I saw a few people, probably around 18, showing some real interest. An encouraging sign! 3 Quote
Michaelr Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 71. I have been a military collector for 60 years but only started to concentrate on Nihonto only 15 years ago. Don’t know how that figures into your average but have been very lucky in finding Great Friends in this new and exciting field MikeR Quote
Sheridan Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 65, but I've only been collecting for about 1 1/2 years... Quote
Alex A Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 Was thinking this looking at the San Francisco pic earlier. Id say about 55, Young uns dont have the spare cash to waste 1 Quote
Matsu3 Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 Pretty sure I don’t count as a collector since I’m broke with no nihonto (for now), but I’m 18. I feel like a newborn compared to some of you. 1 Quote
French nihonto Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 27 years old and have been studying since I was 17 Quote

Me: 57 I do believe the above statement is a huge reason for the older average age of collectors, but not necessarily the average age of those who are interested in the subject though. While I have been interested for a long time, it has only been the last few years I have been able to afford some nicer quality items and also have a few items polished and restored. 1 Quote
Bazza Posted August 5 Report Posted August 5 I'm a newly minted 80 year old, started collecting at 20. I empathise with the member who said he felt under-qualified here... Oh, and it makes me an 'estate-in-waiting'. BaZZa. 4 7 Quote

robinalexander Posted August 5 Report Posted August 5 71 ...started 6 or so years ago ...resigned to the fact that i will always know more about Type 95's than Nihonto (regardless of how little that may be) 1 Quote
Cookie4Monstah Posted August 5 Report Posted August 5 29 here, I hypothesis that the shear amount of reading (material) required to advance in the hobby is a non-starter. You can easily spend just as much on books as you can on nihonto artifacts. With televised anime being all the rage the younger crowd is curious. I’d rather have a nihonto collection than a boatload of Pokémon Charizard cards. I guess that makes me an outlier. 4 Quote
