tbonesullivan Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 This looks to be an old Naginata blade that was turned into a wakizashi, and the blade does look old and used, and like a lot of out of polish blades I have seen before. The characters on the tang are not ones I recognize at all. The fittings for the blade are also made from laminated wood, definitely not what I am used to seeing. The "duck" ornaments on the handle are definitely interesting. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 That looks strange to me. Not what I would expect a NAGINATA NAOSHI to look like. The signature is questionable, at least to me. Does not look very Japanese in my opinion. Maybe it is the images.... Quote
Matsu3 Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 The last character vaguely resembles the kanji for origin, 元, but it's a bit of a stretch. Laminated wood is strange, but I'm still a rookie when it comes to nihonto so I cant really say much. Quote
Lee Bray Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 Exagerated sori, crudely shaped nakago, faked patina(imo) on the nakago, strange kanji(if they are kanji at all), plywood...all suggest this is a fake sword. Quote

The patina does look faked, looks like mostly red and brown rust, with a line of less rusted metal running down the nakago (maybe, can't really tell with the picture quality). 2 Quote
raaay Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 Sorry , It looks like IMHO, an attempt to make a Japanese style sword . classic issues with the mune-machi and ha-machi . and basically the whole tang etc. Quote

I have seen plenty of very old patinated blades, and plenty of WWII blades that barely have any oxidation. This just didn't look right. I can't see any traces of Yasurime, and the edges are not really straight. The Nakago-Jiri in particular just doesn't look shaped right. Quote
obiwanknabbe Posted August 20 Report Posted August 20 This has all the looks of a komonjo ebay sword. Its possible that it started as a real blade of some type, but everything about it was tempered with or faked. Quote
