Bryce Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 G'day Guys, I am wondering if someone can help me with the significance of these bonji on a katana by Gassan Sadakatsu. I think the top one represents Fudo Myo, the next Amida and lastly a stylised lotus throne. Loosely I think these equate to strength and kindness/wisdom. Am I on the right track? Cheers, Bryce 1 Quote
xiayang Posted July 19, 2024 Report Posted July 19, 2024 I believe the second one may be the bonji representing Daiitoku-myōō (大威徳明王) (Wikipedia link: Yamāntaka). The website www.bonji-ichiran.com has a comprehensive list of bonji (in Japanese): here is the entry for Daiitoku-myōō. 1 Quote
Bryce Posted July 19, 2024 Author Report Posted July 19, 2024 Thanks Jan, So they represent two of the five great wisdom kings, Fudo Myoo and Daiitoku Myoo. Both are protective entities. Cheers, Bryce Quote
