Marplot Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 Recently acquired Tanegashima and interested in knowing more about it - Auction info Silver Inlaid Japanese Tanegashima Matchlock Arquebus Manufacturer: Japanese Model: Matchlock Gauge: 52 Barrel: 41 3/8 inch octagon. 103CM Finish: black/silver/brass Stock: hardwood OAL: 134cm Description: Tanegashima arquebuses, named after the island on which they were introduced by shipwrecked Portuguese explorers in the mid-16th century, were used into the late 19th century, long after matchlock firearms had been replaced by flintlock and percussion arms by Europeans and other western countries. The barrel has a block front sight, a pair of silver inlaid dragons, and a traditional grooved block rear sight. The stock features a mix of brass and silver accents with engraved floral, rabbit, and smoke designs. There are also some untranslated markings on the left side by the breech. Rating Definition: Good with attractive aged patina on the silver and brass, dark patina and mild oxidation on the barrel, and mild overall wear. The stock is very good and has minor scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. I also have the book in english. I want to remove the barrel. I want to know best procedure with the bamboo pins? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 Nice decorative piece, probably from Sakai, Osaka. A good example. There is tons of information on this site including a sticky on how to remove a barrel. Pins should push out from left to right, unless they’ve been inserted by someone incorrectly. The Mei under the barrel (if there is one) should clarify the origins. (The description is totally from a Western understanding in orientation, so some small notations will be necessary.) Can you get a clear shot of the ‘untranslated markings’? 1 Quote

Michaelr Posted July 18, 2024 Report Posted July 18, 2024 I am very new to these myself but know what I like, I can’t help you in any way but I think it looks great and wanted to say congratulations. Thank you for sharing MikeR Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted July 19, 2024 Report Posted July 19, 2024 Pop out the pins. Remove the ramrod, and cock the match serpentine. Tap/pull the barrel away from the grip of the stock and when loose, lift out. Take photos of the bisen breech screw and the inside of the pan, with cover/lid open. Also. Please take an up-down photo of the Mei under the barrel Marplot, while pointing the barrel away from you. Quote
