William Jennings Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 Hello all! This I’m interested in this sword that is for sale, but it is in a display box so I am unable to see the nakago. My question is, does it seem authentic to you? I get nervous when I can’t see the nakago to know for sure. Quote
Matsunoki Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 Not much can be said that you could rely on. However the double habaki would suggest a genuine old blade (and sometimes a sign of something decent) but the kashira is a horrible fake replacement. The fuchi looks genuine but poor condition. The blade could have any number of serious flaws that we cannot see. Its a total gamble but might be worth a shot if it’s really cheap. Good luck. Colin 2 Quote
Grey Doffin Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 The handle is wrapped wrong. Too many red flags here. I think there is a reason the pig is in a poke; I'd stay away unless it is dirt cheap or you can see it in hand. Grey 5 Quote
Tohagi Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 Sugata is somehow interesting... Do you know the nagasa? Tsuka ito have been awfully rewrapped, but the ito is probably genuine. Fuchi/kashira are not good (specialy kashira) Why are you considering to buy this sword? A gamble on finding diamonds in a rough? Best regards Éric VD Quote
William Jennings Posted July 17, 2024 Author Report Posted July 17, 2024 @Tohagi the seller said the nagasa is approximately 23 inches but it was difficult to be exact since it was in the glass case. On first impression, the sugata caught my eye and the kissaki seemed correct. But I knew the Ito wrap was off. That’s why I wanted get the opinion of people with more trained eyes. I was wondering if it was an authentic nihonto that was given (cheap) koshirae and put in a display piece for tourists or something? I’m not sure Quote

I’m not sure I think that’s exactly what it is but the blade could be a horror when you take it out the case…….or not🙂 1 Quote
Shugyosha Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 Unless you see it (see good pictures of it) out of the box with the tsuka off then look elsewhere. Money is always a keeper, bad or fake swords aren’t. 1 Quote
Tim Evans Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 Tsuka could possibly be Satsuma Rebellion time period. Usually swords so mounted will not be great treasures. Quote
Tohagi Posted July 17, 2024 Report Posted July 17, 2024 (edited) ...23 inches is à little short for such à sugata. Without better picture I would not take the risk... Dont feel Satsuma to me (short and good quality ito not wrapped classical Satsuma alf knot) , I may be wrong. Best regards, Éric VD Edited July 17, 2024 by Tohagi Addendum Quote
