PFoma Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 Trying to figure out if this guy is real or fake. The sword is serialized but the scabbard is not. https://ibb.co/k90pHn0 https://ibb.co/NN08Y98 https://ibb.co/bQ0FV3x https://ibb.co/Bw3Sd4N https://ibb.co/Q8BBKqd https://ibb.co/sCs1DXW Spoiler Spoiler 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 Yes, this was made by Suya Shoten Co., inspected by the Tokyo 1st inspectors, and approved by the Kokura Army Arsenal. Quote
PFoma Posted July 13 Author Report Posted July 13 Thank you, sir. I couldn't figure out how to link the pictures directly. Any reason the scabbard isn't serialized? Quote
John C Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 It's possible the saya was replaced at some point due to damage. This was common during the war. John C. 1 1 Quote
John C Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 The one on the right looks like a Tokyo 1st inspection mark. Not sure about the left. John C. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 The one on the left is a stamp for private forges. Quote
PFoma Posted July 13 Author Report Posted July 13 Copy. So all original Type 95 Gunto, I presume it's a later config with iron tsuba. Unserialized saya (but period correct). Any idea on current market value? Quote
John C Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 Assuming the blade is in good condition, I've seen them on Ebay in the last two years in the 800-1000 dollar range. John C. Quote
John C Posted July 14 Report Posted July 14 Yes. Not sure it's mismatched; just the serial number is missing. In pristine condition, I would expect it to be in the 1100 to 1500 range and even more for copper handle. John C. 1 Quote
Kiipu Posted July 14 Report Posted July 14 The serial number is 49810 and falls within the range used by Suya. I agree with "John C" that the scabbard is a replacement, either lost or damaged beyond repair. The scabbard inspection marks are as follows. 東 社 (This stamp is either struck at an angle or broken.) 1 Quote
PFoma Posted July 15 Author Report Posted July 15 Copper handle? I presume it isn't copper but rather copper accents? I was under the impression this was a late type 95 given the iron tsuba. Quote
Conway S Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Paul, The handle is aluminum on this one. @Kiipu I believe Suya in this range should have the brass pierced tsuba. Perhaps the whole sword was reworked in addition to swapping the saya. Conway 1 Quote
Kiipu Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 That could very well be the case. Both brass and steel tsubas show up in this Suya range; however, they always have numbered scabbards. Below is Kobe, serial 47961, for comparison. Arsenal Stamps. Quote
PFoma Posted July 15 Author Report Posted July 15 I suppose well never know. But better a real than a fake. :-) Quote

Kiipu Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Type 95 Military Sword made by Suya, serial number 49810. Seems the pictures are now missing from the OP. Fortunately, I had downloaded and saved the pictures for later viewing. Attached are the pictures which have been resized and converted to jpegs. 1 1 Quote
