sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Report Posted July 9, 2024 Here are some "kizu" on my katana. I would like your analysis to be sure of the "Japanese name" of these defects and their severity or otherwise. Thanks 1) LINE Inside the "bo-hi" (only one side of blade) 2) Point near hamon Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 Another thing is a strange color on the IORI MUNE (side opposite Hamon) Is this a KIZU? Quote
Lewis B Posted July 9, 2024 Report Posted July 9, 2024 Which school and era does this blade paper to (assuming its been through Shinsa)? Pretty sure the feature in the bi-hi is a kizu from forging. The black marks are likely some form of corrosion activity. Have they been there since you owned it or developed recently? Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 I bought in AUCTION this blade 2 weeks ago and today it is in my hand. It is from Edo period (first or middle), "shinto". I think the first KIZU is a "fukure" and the second KIZU it is "jiare", but your opinion it's important. About the strange color of top of blade (it'a a "Iori-mune" with "V" up) I don't know Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 The auction description said "good condition" blade... Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 I hope nothing of "very serious" kizu, the sword is my first katana and I like this sword Quote
Shugyosha Posted July 9, 2024 Report Posted July 9, 2024 Severity kind of depends on scale and it’s hard to judge the size of these flaws just from the photos. The fukure might just be a delamination that follows the circular grain of the steel rather than an air pocket. As Lewis says, the dark areas are kitae ware with some old, stabilised corrosion in them. The one I would be worried about is the ware with a white something extending down towards the edge. Do you have a better picture of this? I see nothing fatal so far, but I’d reserve judgement on this last one. Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 tell me the point of blade that you mean Quote

Shugyosha Posted July 9, 2024 Report Posted July 9, 2024 Yep, sorry, posts crossed. Anything similar on the other side in this area? Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 It is so little that I-phone try to find it Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 The same blade area without 5X. it is almost invisible Quote
sc72 Posted July 9, 2024 Author Report Posted July 9, 2024 Here a better photo of the first kizu in the Hi Quote

I'm assuming they are less than a cm at the widest point? To have 2 almost identical features like that does not suggest Fukure which would be random. Quote
Matsunoki Posted July 9, 2024 Report Posted July 9, 2024 Flaws in deep bohi are often core steel showing through in patches. Looks a bit like that but images can mislead. Black spots look like old stabilised rust not fully removed by polisher. Bit worried about the flaw in the hamon……hagire? 1 Quote
Gilles Posted July 9, 2024 Report Posted July 9, 2024 Like John said "The one I would be worried about is the ware" next to the HA (in the HAMON I guess). It is never a good thing but it is a little one. Obviously, the BOHI were carved to hide some ware. Quote
