Newguymike Posted July 6, 2024 Author Report Posted July 6, 2024 Based on combing through the resources and input from bloggers, it would appear that I have a type98 Gunto. The scabbard that accompanied the sword is not military issue and is hard to place. The scabbard is made of wood and is missing the method of attaching to a belt. I’d like to say thank you for all of the support and help. I’ve attached photos of the tsuba, sepas, 1 leather sepa, and habaki. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 6, 2024 Report Posted July 6, 2024 Mike, The wooden saya would have originally been covered in leather. The torn leather seppa would have had a tab with a snap. Swords in the "combat saya" or "informal saya", as Ohmura called them, usually come with a tsuba that has a larger side hole for the leather tab. Your tsuba looks like it was originally made for a metal chuso latch, then widened for the leather tab. The lower positioning of where the tab was on your seppa lines up with the widened hole. Quote
Newguymike Posted July 6, 2024 Author Report Posted July 6, 2024 @Bruce Pennington I’ll add some photos of the fuchi, handle, and scabbard to build a complete picture of the sword. 1 Quote

Newguymike Posted July 8, 2024 Author Report Posted July 8, 2024 Order of sepas, starting at habaki and moving from right to left, then tsuba, moving from left to right. Quote
