Gerry Posted June 14, 2024 Report Posted June 14, 2024 There's a kotetsu katana for sale on Yahoo Japan that has a Yamano Kaemon kinzogan yotsudo mei that looks legit: https://www.jauce.com/auction/r1102474697 Considering that it's a sword in Japan with a kotetsu mei, and no origami, I assume it's gimei. So I'm wondering if Yamano Kaemon would have use da gimei blade for a cutting test? Has anyone seen this before? Listed sword mei on the left, compared to Nihontocraft mei on the right, which seems like a match. Quote
Toryu2020 Posted June 14, 2024 Report Posted June 14, 2024 Its a pretty convincing fake but still a fake, walk away... Quote

Absolutely not, but I'm a novice collector so have a VERY low tolerance for questionable swords. There is a good chance I will buy a baddun someday I just prefer not to make mistakes at the start of my journey. Quote

dkirkpatrick Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 Gerry, I absolutely see the similarities you’re seeing and in spectrum of Kotetsu gimei this is pretty darn good but just start at the top and the first few kanji, then just at general flow. Also, the visible quality of hamon is telling. That said, this was a very time consuming thing to execute requiring a higher degree of skill I should think so guessing it was made as a gift for someone important. Doug Quote
Gerry Posted June 16, 2024 Author Report Posted June 16, 2024 Hi Doug, Oh yes, I agree with you, that there are pretty good kotetsu fakes out there. In fact, apparently, even kotetsu himself had issues distinguishing gimei blades from his own during his lifetime. But the hamon is a dead give-away. Quote
Jacques Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 A trained eye can immediately see that the gimei's engraving lacks the quality of the shoshin. i add Yasurime don't match Quote
