awsomposom Posted June 12, 2024 Report Posted June 12, 2024 I believe the side with the most characters reads "8 month lucky day 1 year of Tenna (tenwa) era", but I'm not certain. As for the other side I'm not sure. Thank you for any and all help. Quote
mywei Posted June 12, 2024 Report Posted June 12, 2024 貞重 Sadashige Your reading of the date is correct. However the Tenwa being at the end rather than the start, and the way the mei is cut seems a bit suspect imho 4 3 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted June 12, 2024 Report Posted June 12, 2024 This is not an EDO era sword, and it is not of Japanese origin, I think. 4 1 Quote
The Blacksmith Posted June 12, 2024 Report Posted June 12, 2024 Like Jean Collin, I do not think this is actually Japanese. Any chance of seeing the complete blade please? 1 Quote
awsomposom Posted June 12, 2024 Author Report Posted June 12, 2024 Thank you very much. Can I ask how you were able to tell it's sadashige? The first kanji looks very different to me but I'm new to this and want to understand. On 6/12/2024 at 10:51 AM, mywei said: 貞重 Sadashige Your reading of the date is correct. Expand The 'sada' is cut in a fairly typical way for 貞 Have a look at several signatures with that character in it like the example on the yari given above 1 Quote
awsomposom Posted June 12, 2024 Author Report Posted June 12, 2024 I can post more pictures of the sword. I apologize in advance for the bad shape of the blade, it went though a house fire years ago and has been in rough shape since. ROKUJURO Posted June 13, 2024 Report Posted June 13, 2024 Kyle, probably no big loss! It did not have much value before the fire, and now it is just a piece of metal. Your next sword will hopefully be an authentic one with lots of features to enjoy! 1 Quote
