i have a katana, mumei,  possible O-suriage  so the inscription is probably altobori

 

I am not sure what it says and the meaning

Out of these characters, only the second has a standard form:

 

抬 = lift, carry

 

The fourth one is a rare variation (see here) of

 

指 = finger

 

I have no idea which standard character the first and the third one (扌+合+辛) might correspond to though...

This is a shinto phrase: Samuhara. The kanji aren't standard kanji (in China or anywhere). They are a kind of made up kanji, meant to invoke a feeling of self-protection. The final kanji on the sword is different from what it should be, but I think the intent is clear.

thanks to everyone for the information!!!   at least i don't feel too bad not being able to figure it out, seems like you just have to "know what it is" or recognize it, i will try to remember
