This Chiyozuru Katana was acquired by me in the Netherlands as a bare blade, with no mounting. I was able to mount it in a shirasaya. It has a Habaki as well. The blade has a beautiful Jigane and dates to the early Muromachi period. There are a few foraging imperfections on the blade, I have done my best to highlight these imperfections in the images. The blade is made in the Yamashiro tradition by the Chiyozuru school. Beautiful sori and hamon activity aswell.

Just a thought, but even it is O-Suriage then I would expect 2nd Mekugi-Ana on Nakago. Maybe it's Ubu after all.

I personally suspect it to be O-Suriage, I have multiple early koto/Nanbokucho period katana they are all O-Suriage and have only one Mekugi-Ana. I believe it is common to see only one mekugi-ana on these blades even though they are most likely O-Suriage.

That is something new to me. I don't see any Mekugi-Ana holes being filled and would expect that sword before being shortened had at least one. I doubt it was shortened so much that old Mekugi-Ana was removed with material.

The nakago is 14,2 cm or 5.59 inches.

So, 5.59" +  25.3937" = 30.9837" , therefore, it is not too difficult to imagine that our subject sword here was once somewhere in the neighborhood of 32" inches long (nagasa) originally based on the approximate time period of manufacture. In other words what we are seeing was once all or at least mostly all sword. Most if not all of the original nakago was removed when shortened.

I'm basing my assumption and conclusion on a 27.3" Chiyozuru Nambokucho period sword I had the pleasure of studying at length (pun intended). Below is an image of the nakago of that sword from which you can see how a nakago including the original mekugiana could be o-suriage'd and then sport just one mekugiana on a ~ 25.39" sword.
