Banton989 Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 So I'm very new to collecting, only have a type 95 gunto so far (sorry bear with me!) Lol. Happened to wander into a local antique shop today and found a genuine Daisho! Umfortunatly in poor condition, with a fake signature on the katana too, but were great to see! 1 Quote
Alex A Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 Hello. Dont want to rain on your parade but not a genuine daisho Likely cobbled together not so long ago. Decent for display purpose maybe 1 Quote
Banton989 Posted May 18, 2024 Author Report Posted May 18, 2024 Thanks Alex, what else would need to match menuki? What would your guestimate be on the blade & koshirae age? Quote
Alex A Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 Hi, Samurai did on occasion pair oddball swords and fittings together, its not an exact science. The tsuka look recent and fairly amateur As said though, nothing wrong as a pair for display. Daisho with real old provenance, in untouched condition, rare as hens teeth. Ps, only looked at the koshirae, blade looks out of polish 1 Quote
John C Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 The "mei" looks like it was attempted with a small punch rather than a chisel. John C. 1 Quote
Brian Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 That lower one has a ruined nakago. Stuffed. And a fake amateur signature. It was probably part of the blade at some point if it's even real. 2 Quote
2devnul Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 How to sell poor quality swords, put them in same/similar modern/replica Koshirae and sale them as Daisho. I always wonder why people think that Daisho should always be matching Koshirae. So many old photos (or even older drawings) of Samurai where you can see differencies on Wakizashi and Katana. Quote
Alex A Posted May 18, 2024 Report Posted May 18, 2024 For maybe the 9th time, just take a look at the swords of the 47 Ronin True Daisho may have been the goal for some but not always reality for others. 1 Quote
Brendan campbell Posted May 20, 2024 Report Posted May 20, 2024 Hi Adam, would these have been for sale in Evesham. ?? If so I saw them there last year, and yes they were distressed . I never looked at the tangs , but that signature has devalued the sword . Sad . Quote
2devnul Posted May 21, 2024 Report Posted May 21, 2024 Hi, Here you go, a Daisho for everyone. Just put them in matching Koshirae and 'voila' ... Katana: https://www.ebay.com...2:g:4xIAAOSw56JmS2~N Wakizashi: https://www.ebay.com...6:g:OnoAAOSwDKNmSjxv Quote

Brendan campbell Posted May 21, 2024 Report Posted May 21, 2024 Adam, some years ago they had a good variety of Japanese swords .Like everything they have dried up. You have to admit even so they still have a vast verity of stock to look at, sadly shops like this are disappearing and it’s all going on the net. Nice to see another member just south of Birmingham. I’m north near Lichfield . Brendan Quote
