Bruce: Did you notice during the sword making video (at about 16 minutes) they were talking about the Yamato-den (school) and showing three dots in the shape of a triangle? They were on a variety of tools. Hmmmmm..

Yes, at 16:22 they even showed a close-up shot.  Were they describing the dots?

Yes, the narrator says the three dots are part of the signature of the smith who made the farm tools. Mitsu-boshi Ichimonji.

Ok, thanks Steve!

 

So, on first glance, then, I don't think that's the same as what we are seeing on the WWII blades (and even before).  You can see this one is tied to other kana:

And yet, there are a couple of smiths that did use distinct marks.
