Hi all, new here and am overawed at the amazing knowledge.

Looking to buy my 1st type 95, found this but it looks in remarkably good condition (possible repaint?)

All else seems good from what I have read so far, correct screw placement and stamps for an early serial aluminium tsuka. Fuller also looks good to my eyes, its just the immaculate paint that's worrying. All serial numbers are matching.

Apologies for the not so great pics, it's all I have at the moment.

Any help/opinions much appreciated.

I think if it's a cheap fake they have gone to an awful lot of trouble to get all the details right. Correct manufacturer, inspection and arsenal stamps for the age of manufacture date hinted at by the serial number, correct screw through grip wrap on 1 side of the tsuka for the serial number range. Good terminations to each end of the fuller?

I think a repaint as you suggest.  The sword knot could be from some other country?  Note the metal rivet on one end.   I do not recall the Japanese ones having a rivet.

Could use closer shots of the stamps and tsuka diamonds, but it looks like legit, with a total repaint.  Tassel is either a repro or like Thomas said, from another country.

I'd be excited about this one, even with the repaint due to the very early handle design.  Note the barrel screw passed through the ito on one side, and the wrap starts against the fuchi on one side and crosses away from it on the other like real ito does.  They modified the design a little later.  I had one of these a while back, but traded it to Stegel for a kyugunto.

I haven't see the fakers use this pattern tsuka.

Thanks Bruce,

I've purchased it now so will send close up's when it arrives. Have to say I am excited!

Adam:

There are companies that make decent replicas and sold as such (Swords of Northshire, Cult of Athena, etc.). I believe this is one of those (the tassel is a modern copy for sure.).

Hi John,

I did check out all the current copies being made by these and others beforehand, none were the earlier pattern Aluminium tsuka.

Hello,

It’s a genuine sword that has just been overcleaned and overpainted with a modern reproduction knot from the London uniform company…

Paul..
