Mei opinions.

I am curious on thoughts of this being gimei or not, I'm leaning towards it being so based on my research. If anyone is more familiar with this smiths Kanji I'd love to know your thoughts.

 

The seller claims it is authentic to the style of the smith purporting to be Inoue Shinkai.

Dear Taylor.

 

First warning, the phrase, 'authentic to the style of the smith', could mean as little as the same shape more or less.  Next, and I suspect you have already done this, does this look like the signature of an excellent smith in full command of his powers?  I would say it looks more like someone hesitantly working at making a passable copy, wouldn't you?  Have a look at this thread and scroll down to the last illustration, looking at the flow of the strokes and the ends of each stroke in particular.  https://markussesko....8/kantei-1-sugata-4/

 

Add the yasurime and perhaps the rather red colour of the nakago, but that could just be the photograph.  I would say that about wraps it up and your instinct is correct, however others with much better knowledge of this smith will chime in I'm sure.

Please treat my comment lightly. It is just based on my "look&feel" from the picutre you posted. 

 

I don't like the look of Nakago, looks more of a rust, then patina. However, it could be due to the photo, or maybe there is patina under the rust. 

 

Mei also doesn't convince me. Looks a bit too 'fresh'. I can't comment on strokes quality as I haven't studied this smith's work at all. 

 

I personally have a Gimei blade that 'fooled' me (check mine topic about Hojoji Sadahiro Wakizashi), but this one would be questionable for me from the start.

 

Ps. Do you have more pictures of this blade?

Thank you for the comments and assisting with my intuition on this one.  Indeed I believe the strokes and flow of the kanji I have compared with don't align quite exactly thus far and the fact that it seems often be faked, here are some more photos upon request.

it must have at least one element notare. For example,  if you find a sword signed Inoue Shinkai with a perfect suguha, it's 100% gimei.
