Well, this dealer is known for the odd cheeky monkey prices and write-ups.

Also, possibly the "Shogun effect", a situation where dealers take advantage of tv shows.

I fear some inflated prices ahead:laughing:

That happened when the first series came out as I recall. Prior to the series coming out WWII officers swords where from about £75 upwards. After the series came out the were from about £175! Then came the Great Japan Exhibition at the Royal Academy, and things just snowballed from there.......

I just love their fanciful descriptions on that site Alex. I was looking at a couple of items from the Napoleonic War, and the descriptions seemed to detail the entire history of the conflict, almost none of which had anything to do with the object in question! :dunno:

Must work for them.

There are many people around with more money than sense

There are many people around with more sense than money

There are many people around with no sense and no money

There are some people around with sense and money

I wonder which of these are the target market for Lanes Armoury🙂….and which are not🙂

……smart marketing imo…..as you say Alex, must work for them.

Briefly read about the fleur-de-lys symbol and it is linked with Christianity.

One issue i have is whether or not the pattern on the Kabuto is in fact fleur-de-lys decor ?

Very little linking that symbol to Japan and its use there, but who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

Just seems a very bold claim.

I guess biased beliefs come easier when your on the selling end.

But what are we looking at?

a two plate nanban kabuto, with kirigane.

the style refers to what the Nagasone made.

there is a similar one in the Wakayama Saika exhibition catalogue, described as maybe Saiga, but further than the kirigane, I see no link.

later not matching kuwagata dai, (maybe new?)

Early edo, probably.

nice and interesting kabuto, C- condition.

Hi Alex , the Lanes have more stories !! and attributions than Hans Christian Anderson .

off topic slightly a couple of friends of mine popped into there shop  while on holiday and asked to see a couple of swords in a display case , the answer was if you buy the sword you can then have a look at it , not sure they would sell much with that attitude ?

I like the last line of their listing: ' The interior lining and cords of this kabuto have been replaced in the past 100 years'.

Personally, I think the whole helmet has been replaced in the past 100 years!:dunno:

I am thinking that possibly the skull was a cabasset or peaked morion, whether it was an original one or not is of course questionable too. The whole thing appears to me to have been embellished and 'antiqued', and antiqued rather badly too.  The mempo is about the poorest that I have ever seen, and has a yodare-kake that doesn't belong. The shikoro doesn't belong either, nor does it appear to have any age, it also being a very poor replacement. The maedate, well if this is genuine, then it is an extremely poor one, and very badly fitted too! I doubt that even this is genuine personally.

The whole aging of the helmet and mempo is far too even for my liking, and to my eyes appears false too, to cover up bad workmanship. I have had a few kabuto, and I certainly wouldn't want this one!

I would have loved to have heard Ian's thoughts on this piece.
