chgruener Posted April 12, 2024 Report Posted April 12, 2024 Hello all, This one has puzzled me for some time, however I haven’t properly done my research on it. I’m assuming this mount and scabbard are early 1900s. The blade is what I’m curious about. The etchings are unique, something I don’t see too often, and there is no signature. It does appear to have been remounted at least once before. Any input is greatly appreciated! 3 Quote
Rivkin Posted April 12, 2024 Report Posted April 12, 2024 Can't estimate the sugata with such angled photos. The nakago has a strong Kaga vibe, probably Edo period. To pinpoint it further we need - full nakago without habaki. Full blade without camera distortions. 4 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted April 13, 2024 Report Posted April 13, 2024 The mounts are standard pattern Type 19 Kyu Gunto officer sword. The lack of decoration on the back strap indicates this is a Company grade sword for officers Lieutenant - Captain. The family crest is associated with the Ashikaga family, but also used by a litany of other families by that point. Nice looking sword, is there any provenance with it? 2 Quote

Geraint Posted April 13, 2024 Report Posted April 13, 2024 Dear Christopher. Nice sword. The blade decoration is not etched but carved and is called a horimono. This particular one is a sankozuka ken, for more information see here, https://markussesko....8/kantei-1-sugata-4/ You will need to scroll down a bit to find this one. All the best. Quote
vajo Posted April 14, 2024 Report Posted April 14, 2024 A strong Yamashiro influence with the typical Kaga nakago. You find that for example on Kiyomitsu blades. Quote
