Conway S Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 Greetings, It looks "real" to me, but something about these listings always seem a bit off. Maybe it's the glare and grainy quality in each photo. Plus the seppa are in the wrong order. Looks like the saya had two different serial numbers at one point. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235514477237 Conway Quote
John C Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 Serial number on the blade seems to be in the right range; stamps on the fuchi look legit. But we always have to take that seller with a grain of salt. John C. 1 Quote
drb 1643 Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 It looks like a legit copper hilt with a correct but mismatched saya. Tom Quote
lonely panet Posted April 11, 2024 Report Posted April 11, 2024 Looks too good for the reputation of the dealer Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted April 12, 2024 Report Posted April 12, 2024 Wow, that's a fascinating saya, all by itself! Two previous numbers, and neither the number on the blade. The first number was actually struck out when they added the second number, which is oddly higher than the number of the blade. 2 Quote
Conway S Posted April 13, 2024 Author Report Posted April 13, 2024 Also odd that there are two seppa on the front end of the tsuba. One is the correct style for NCO swords while the other appears to have a smooth edge. Conway Quote
vajo Posted April 15, 2024 Report Posted April 15, 2024 This seppa is on the wrong side. It must be on the habaki side. The smaller seppa is on the fuchi side. I think it is assambled false. 2 Quote

The three seppa doesn't seem right...Praying hands emoji for the person that bought it. That's more than I would be pay for one, at least in that condition. Conway 1 Quote
John C Posted April 19, 2024 Report Posted April 19, 2024 He was selling a mantetsu at the same time that I believe also went for over 2500. The market seems strong at the moment. John C. 2 Quote
Conway S Posted April 19, 2024 Author Report Posted April 19, 2024 And then this Mantetsu also from the same seller only sells for a modest $1100 even though these mounts are far more rare than the Type 98. I think certain eBay sellers have developed a status of being "trusted", whether this status is deserved or not it depends on the particular seller. This consequently inflates the prices they receive online. Mantetsu and Type 95 also seem to be items of interest for WW2 collectors that are not solely focused on collecting Japanese swords. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235403345246 Conway Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted April 20, 2024 Report Posted April 20, 2024 Dang. Don't think I had that one on file. I've messaged him to see if he's got a serial number photo on file. Quote

Badly struck, it could be mistaken for a seki stamp. Maybe that's why it went so cheaply. John C. Quote
