The photos of this sword are from a prolific ebay dealer in Japan, who deals in many low end swords aimed at western buyers. Not saying it isn't Nihonto, it clearly is, just best to temper any dreams that this is an undiscovered master work. Where was this purchased from?

Hi John,

I know this is a low end sword, I mean with a value of under 1000 bucks I am clearly not expecting it to be an undiscovered master haha. My initial goal was getting a Nihinto. The rest, regarding the mei is just speculation and a fun research, that’s fine!

I bought it on Catawiki, an auction platform for collectables. Selected by Patrice Sabbah via the platform and seller from Japan (I’ve seen their ads on EBay).

kind regards

The menuki does look pretty. I think I'll keep that design in mind for the future.
Personally I would not want to buy a blade without shirasaya though. No matter how much I love proper mountings, from all what I read they are improper for storage and it needs proper moisture.
I have actually had some interest in buying loose koshirae (with those wooden blades in them) but I really do not know the market prices for such things.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge could offer some enlightenment?

Prices cover a wide range starting from hundreds rising to tens of thousands. It all depends on age, rarity, quality (Juyo), style, and originality.

For example; https://nihonto.com/...e/fittings/koshirae/
