WISDOMSEEKER Posted April 3, 2024 Author Report Posted April 3, 2024 On 4/3/2024 at 4:40 PM, Franco D said: Hello, Kanbun Shinto is probably a pretty good bet as far as age goes based upon shape and other factors. Although there is a partial mei that could be used to help track down or at least narrow down the possibilities of who may have made this blade. At least for myself, there may be a more immediate issue that needs attention after looking at these images. The images of this blade at the kissaki end and also towards the habaki raises questions of possible heat exposure. If that is the case, it would render the sword itself a souvenir. Sometimes in such cases the fittings also demonstrate heat damage exposure, but the fittings look to be fine here. Fire damage to nihonto is not an uncommon problem. Hopefully that is not the case here. Regards Expand Hi Franco, Thank you for insight into my sword. I'm going to have the sword looked into by someone affiliated with Japanese swords. I understand that you may believe the discoloration might be heat related. I'm no expert by any means but I will look into it. Based upon it not being heat altered what type of value do you believe it has? If it has a substantial value I would consider having it professional polished. Thanks again for your insight. all the best, Tom Quote
Franco Posted April 3, 2024 Report Posted April 3, 2024 Hello Tom, The best way for me to answer your questions is; First, have the sword fully assessed. Once assessed, then, comeback and ask for value opinions. Secondly, if mine, I would not have this sword restored even if it checks out to be restorable. The exception to that is if by some longshot this sword turns out to be something exceptional. In general, unless a piece is Tokubetsu Hozon level or better in form and or quality, restoration may not be a wise decision. https://nihontocraft...hinsa_Standards.html Regards 1 Quote
Rivkin Posted April 3, 2024 Report Posted April 3, 2024 It looks like either Kambun shinto or late Muromachi with altered sugata, insignificant signature most likely - its not worth much. I would keep it as is. Would appreciate no further postings here of the great knowledge of "someone affiliated with nihonto who looked at the blade". 1 Quote
