Ilovekatana Posted March 25, 2024 Report Posted March 25, 2024 I have a sword that I am currently trying to study and the yasurime on it has me confused. I can't figure out what type it is. The closest one to it I could find is kiri(what throws me off is the diagonal lines at the top). Here is a picture of the nakago with rough drawings of the yasurime. Quote
Geraint Posted March 27, 2024 Report Posted March 27, 2024 Dear Joseph. It might just be me but with your blue additions I can't see any yasurime, perhaps that's why nobody has chipped in. If what you can see does not correspond to kesho in any meaningful sense then it may be that the sloping lines are not yasurime at all, lines caused by polishing perhaps? Can't see much but it does look from this as of the tanto has seen some polishes. If in doubt call it kiri. All the best. 1 Quote
Ilovekatana Posted March 27, 2024 Author Report Posted March 27, 2024 That makes sense. Thank you for the help. Quote
Brian Posted March 27, 2024 Report Posted March 27, 2024 Not unusual anyways for the top to be higaki....cross/diagonal yasurime, especially on late shinto/shinshinto Quote
Ilovekatana Posted March 27, 2024 Author Report Posted March 27, 2024 I just looked closely at the other side the nakago. It doesn't have the the diagonal lines and is in standard kiri. So maybe it is from a previous polish. Edit: Also to add this is the same unpapered "soshu masahiro" from some of my previous posts Quote
Mark S. Posted March 28, 2024 Report Posted March 28, 2024 Yasurime are applied by the smith and not by the polisher. It wouldn’t be done during the polishing process. 1 Quote
Geraint Posted March 28, 2024 Report Posted March 28, 2024 Dear Mark. Absolutely correct, given a proper polish, however given the very little we have to go on my suspicion is that this has had some rather less than traditional work done to it. All the best. Quote
Geraint Posted March 30, 2024 Report Posted March 30, 2024 Just saw this and wondered if it might be relevant, https://www.aoijapan...ord/2024/24054-2.jpg All the best. 1 Quote
Ilovekatana Posted March 30, 2024 Author Report Posted March 30, 2024 Interesting. I'll have to take another look at my swords nakago, but that might be what I'm seeing. Thank you. Quote
