Hello

Just a quick question.  Can anyone recommend me a source outside Japan I can send my sword to get a saya made? I'm looking at ishime brown colour with basic horn fittings for iaido ? Preferably I want the saya to be made of honoki.

Sending to Japan would be my first choice,  but we all know the hassles that entails.

Thanks in advance

Got in touch with Andrew.  He could only advise me to contact Nosyudo in Japan to get the saya made. I'm trying to avoid sending it to Japan because of all the hassles involved at the recipients end . Andrew isn't aware of any other artisans outside of Japan who could this work ? Maybe someone in the USA?

Jeremy,

there are certainly some SAYASHI outside of Japan, but why don't you make a TSUNAGI which you could send anywhere without risk? You could even make a metal one if required.

There is Brian Tschernega on the West Coast (WA) USA. The habaki will be needed unless a new habaki is being made. It is important to note that local climate conditions (time of year/humidity) may affect the fit upon return.

I don't have the skills to make a paper aeroplane let alone a tsunagi! It's a good idea in theory though

Ok thanks.  I'll try to reach out to him.

You can buy the wood to make your own saya from Namakawa Heibei. It's cheap, split in two, dry, and arrives in the U.S. in about 1 week.

You can buy Tamahagane too, may as well cut out the middleman and make the sword while he's at it! :glee:
