John A Stuart Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Hi All, I wish to remount this tsuba. The nakagoana is right for the job. Has anyone removed them before. I am directing this to those who do this work as a matter of course. It seems I could do this job with no problem. I have all the tools but, wish to avoid a problem. John Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 12, 2009 Author Report Posted November 12, 2009 OK, so I removed them. I had one PM that gave me confidence. Anyhow some info for those who may have a similar task. Using a fine jewelers saw I cut them and then pressed them towards the ceter gap. I was worried the peened metal would adhere, however they came out easily. When they were installed notches were cut into the nakagoana to prevent them slipping. They don't interfere with the mounting and I won't fill them, but, they do make the ana irregular looking. It is now mounted. Looks Ok, I think. John Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Sorry John, I missed this thread and your query. It looks as though you've figured it out though :D . You may gain some further insight from this photo essay I did recently showing the fitting of seki-gane to a sukashi tsuba of mine; here's a link regards, Ford Quote
Jean Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Quote Looks Ok, I think. John NO, JOHN, it is not OK - above all, not in the early morning - it should be strictly forbidden to post such pictures on the board, I just had a stroke and had to call the cardiolog Be prepared to have you safe cracked ... John A Stuart Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 Thanks Ford, The only difference with my tsuba was the sekigane were placed away from the terminal points of the nakagoana so the notches had to be installed. It had come from a mounting for a blade much smaller, a tanto. I had to burnish the ana after removal to eliminate burrs. The thickness was about 1/4 mm less so I placed a shim in the fuchi. The seppa I could have used were too thick and it wouldn't have been right. John Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 Jean, I appreciate it. It is nice to have a sword mounted as befits it, just like your Shizu. John Quote
Marc BROQUIN Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Hello, Nice set John ! Very good remounting and very nice tsuba. Congrats ! Why did you choose this color for the tsuka ito ? Best Marc Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 Thanks Marc, The ito was not my choice. Jean, correct. John Quote
Jean Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 I knew it. You were right to do it my friend. Such a sword deserved (jewel) deserved an ecrin. :D :D Darcy must be happy that we take care of his babies Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 Yes. As did he. Fortunately for me no government got any money through customs as it was all within Canada. One of my pet peeves is that they get tax monies for no reason. John Quote
