Yves Posted February 24, 2024 Report Posted February 24, 2024 The question is about the combination of a kogatana with kozuka into the pocket of the saya of a wackizashi. I sometimes see that the edge of the pocket where the kogatana slides into (the saya) is lined with a metal fitting. Is this the norm or is the kogatana slid into the pocket right under the kurigata? Thanks. Quote
Matsunoki Posted February 24, 2024 Report Posted February 24, 2024 Usually it is the Kogai that is stored in the slot running under the kurigata. The kogatana/kozuka is usually stored in a slightly wider slot on the other side of the saya ie the side that faces towards the body when worn. There is often a reinforcing small fitting at the base of that slot which can be made from various materials…..most often lacquered horn but also ivory, metal, wood. For example…. KOZUKA KOGAi Hope that helps? 2 Quote
Geraint Posted February 24, 2024 Report Posted February 24, 2024 Dear Yves. Usually the kogatana/kozuka fits into the saya on the opposite side to the kurigata, the kogai, when present is the one that fits underneath the kurigata. And there are usually two fittings, one sliver of horn or other materials just underneath the saya opening so that the back of the kodzuka does not rub and a horn or sometimes metal fitting across the saya at the mouth, Have a look here, https://www.rockisla...th-saya-and-kogatana I see that Matsunoki has beaten me to it. All the best. 1 Quote
Yves Posted February 25, 2024 Author Report Posted February 25, 2024 Hi, Thanks for the replies. Ok that explains it a bit better. So that would mean that when worn the kozuka would be on the inside of the swords/saya if it is opposed to the kurigata. I was a bot worried that I still needed to find another set of those, but apparently the edge of the pocket can be of horn as well. I ordered my kurigata and koiguchi in horn so suppose they will line the pocket with horn as well. Quote

Yves Posted February 27, 2024 Author Report Posted February 27, 2024 Yes it is. Everything in water buffel horn. Quote
