Thomas I don’t want to hijack this thread from Joseph but I sure could use some help. I sent in the form for three blades along with my check for $300.00 for the Orlando Japanese Sword Show Shinsa. I have never done this before. I haven’t heard anything back yet ( I know it’s not until June) but I have no clue how it works or what to do. Could you explain what I should expect, how I should prepare my blades and what will be expected from me. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time while submitting the blades as I know these are important people and I am sure it can be a little hectic and I really don’t want to look foolish. Thank you, or anyone else for your time and help

@Michaelr will you be at the event submitting the blades? If you will be there in person, you should receive a scheduled time to take your blade(s) for submission. There will be a table outside the room for blade preparation. You strip your blade of all fittings and the habaki. You will make a temporary saya from newspaper. --> see youtube video link below. Once you submit the blade(s) to the receiver, they will give you a claim ticket and estimated time of pick-up. (Usually about 1 hour) You come back with your claim ticket(s) and get your blade and worksheet. You will know right away if it passed, or was rejected, or found to be horyu (shinsa cannot say yes or no to the signature). If you get a pass, you then pay the additional fee for the papers to be made and sent to you. Getting the papers can take 3-6 months.

If someone at the show is submitting for you, they will do all of the above, and mail the blade(s) and worksheet back to you.

Hope this all helps!

Dan

Michael -

Dan has done an excellent job above with one exception we do not use paper saya as we like to keep anything extraneous out of the shinsa room. Please see our webpages, especially the FAQ page and if you have further questions please do ask us here.

Note - we need to reach a certain critical mass before we can schedule timeslots (don't worry your date and time will be reserved) - once we are closer to the event you will receive an email reservation for your timeslot...

Note you do not need to make one like that for a show that's a heavy duty one for shipping just the blade.

I couldn't find any other videos. I agree, this is WAAAAY too much for shinsa submission.

I do have one question. For the Orlando Shinsa, when is the latest I can register for it? I have a sword I bought recently through jauce that I plan to submit for shinsa, but it is still in Japan being deregistered(they say it takes 2-3 weeks). I don't know when I will have the sword in hand.

You can register right up to June 1st - if you wish. If you need a specific day and time then early registration is recommended...

Thank you all very much for your answers. Dan to answer your question, yes I will be submitting my own blades as I have a table at the Orlando Show every year. It’s a great show and I always look forward to it. This year will be special for me as I have never submitted a blade to Shinsa. Thank all of you again.  MikeR

Will there ever  be a day when we can submit photos to a shinsa team. Lol especially for the ones who live outside of USA.

One can dream.

They would have to be exceptional photos. We have looked at a Shinsa in Europe but it seems the stars have never aligned...

I will have a table at the Orlando show/shinsa. For a fee, I will submit your item(s) for you, and return mail back to you with the worksheet. More details to come on this.
