middlTom Posted February 17, 2024 Report Posted February 17, 2024 Hi All! Its maybe an impoosible mission? i am quite new at Nihonto world , but i have a Hira-Zukuri Wakizashi with a fairly curvey blade, currently in shirasaya, but i really like to found a koshiare for it ! is it any chance ? if so where should i start looking first? Tsuka/Tsuba is will be easier but what about saya?! I want it to look authentic, with period stuffs (can add picture later) Thank You Quote
oli Posted February 17, 2024 Report Posted February 17, 2024 Koshiare must be made for the wakiyashi. You can buy, Menuki, Tsuba and Fuchikashira from the time. Example for this service: https://nihontoantiq...m/sword-restoration/ , Regards Oliver Quote
ROKUJURO Posted February 17, 2024 Report Posted February 17, 2024 Messieurs, It is KOSHIRAE and WAKIZASHI! Jack, as Oliver points out, it would be pure luck to find a fitting KOSHIRAE, but not completely impossible. It is a bit like winning in the lottery....some seem to win the bucket of gold. Having a KOSHIRAE custom made is a bit easier but expensive. The TOSOGU (metal parts) could be bought, but the wood/lacquer parts would have to be made. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted February 17, 2024 Report Posted February 17, 2024 Hi Tom, Odds of finding a koshirae that is available for sale and that fits your wakizashi are close enough to zero that it makes no sense to look. As stated, having one custom built will be quite expensive. Most every beginner wants to do this; nearly none of the old timers do because they know the bother and expense and they know also that they'd never be able to get their money back when the time comes to sell. Another option, and one that makes sense, is to buy a wakizashi koshirae, not bothering to see if it fits, and display it next to your sword in its shirasaya, where it belongs anyway. Grey 1 Quote
