Ilovekatana Posted February 15, 2024 Report Posted February 15, 2024 I like to look through yahoo auctions Japan via jauce for fun and found something interesting. The sword is a supposed masamune. It is not papered but does have a shumei, though I don't know who attributed it(I can't read Japanese). The seller claims that the current owners ancestors passed it down as a "masamune" and that it ended up overseas after ww2 going through multiple hands before ending up in the current owners hands. Now whether or not this story is true I cant say, however the sword does look nice. Its also way outside of my price range. Heres a link for anyone who might care: https://www.jauce.com/auction/b1114453731 Also heres a few pictures; 1 Quote

Admittedly, I am skeptical of the listing. Mostly due to the lack of papers or proof of the supposed story. I just posted it because thought the sword looked interesting. 1 Quote
SteveM Posted February 15, 2024 Report Posted February 15, 2024 The appraiser is supposedly Hon'ami Kōtoku (1554-1619). The second Masamune to show up on NMB in a week. Lucky times, indeed. 1 4 Quote
Rivkin Posted February 15, 2024 Report Posted February 15, 2024 There is a guy there who takes shinshinto blades, uses some interesting chemical to make very dark utsuri and sometimes he puts a signature with a gold marker or chisels ichi if he passes it as ichimonji. P.S. No, you are not going to buy a quality blade for 50$ that others missed. You'll save yourself and us a lot of time if you stop trying. Yes, we all made our share of mistakes, and many were worse than this one or certainly more expensive. 1 Quote

Also do you have a link on the guy, it sounds interesting and I want to know what to look for. Quote
Brian Posted February 15, 2024 Report Posted February 15, 2024 Not a Masamune. But on the other hand, it does look like a very nice blade. Not sure if the utsuri is fake or enhanced. But would be very interested to see what attribution it would get if it were unsigned/attributed. 3 Quote

Shugyosha Posted February 15, 2024 Report Posted February 15, 2024 Well it looks like someone has drunk the Koolade: 13m Yen is the current bid (unless it’s the seller bidding of course). Joseph, I hope that wasn’t you… 1 Quote

Shugyosha Posted February 15, 2024 Report Posted February 15, 2024 Ah - sorry, I don’t buy from these sites so i’m largely ignorant of the process and I missed that. Quote
