What are these sparkly patches?

Apologies for the quality of the photos as they were taken via phone. As the title asks, does anyone know what these sparkly patches are? They are found throughout the jihada. Are they possibly ji nie?

They resemble rust pitting that has been partially cleaned off. Need better images. Does not look like ji-nie. 
under magnification can you see the surface is slightly pitted?

As set above this looks like areas of past corrosion. This is not nie or any other kind of normal activity in the blade.
