Next question.  Does a gimei signature detract from the value of a piece?  The one above went for $500 USD, which seems reasonable for the quality of the work.  

 

I have this Somin (gimei) that I enjoy quite a bit, but is it worthless because its Gimei?

Gimei signature does not devalue a well made Kinko tsuba. Many fabulous Kinko tsuba are gimei but still sell for big  money based on their own technical and artistic qualities. That’s a bit different to swords and it takes a bit of getting used to. However when you get a genuine Mei by a big name the price will skyrocket.

Have a Quick Look at the two tsuba discussed in this thread. An excellent example of a fine gimei (ie “school of” vs a genuine tsuba. The gimei is still a great work but look at the price realised on the real one!
