Any chance this top kanji has something to do with rank, either military or civil structure?

Dear Bruce.

 

I realise that your interest in the sword is probably from the military point of view but can I just say that the Hamabe school from Inaba produced some very nice blades.  Plenty of detail on the link that Jean posted.  I've had an interest in the swords of Inaba for a while and have yet to find a Hamabe blade that I didn't like.  Obviously condition is a key issue but if you get the chance then go for it!

No. The sword just comes with an all brown tassel, and if it had a rank on the surrender tag, it would give us some answers to the question about the brown tassel.

Well then it might be nice to see the blade. I know your just doing it to collect info but the sword enthusiast in us care about seeing his work.

Is there anything above this character that might indicate to what company etc. the owner might have belonged to?
