Gunner1171 Posted January 26, 2024 Report Posted January 26, 2024 This is a sword I’m looking at tomorrow. These are the only pictures I have so far. I’m pretty excited about it but looking to see if anyone smarter than me can translate the wooden tag. interested in anyone’s opinions and thoughts as well. thank you in advance! Quote
Shugyosha Posted January 26, 2024 Report Posted January 26, 2024 Hi Gunner, the surrender tag is a hard read because the photos have uploaded upside-down. Any chance you can rotate them and repost them? You might want to snag a photo of the tang and signature with any stamps too so that you know exactly what you’re looking at. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 27, 2024 Report Posted January 27, 2024 The tag is badly rubbed, hovering on the edge between illegible and barely legible. It seems to give an address and a name, but to get the exact reading would take someone hours of detective work! 1 Quote
Shugyosha Posted January 27, 2024 Report Posted January 27, 2024 Perhaps if we all chip in a little we can get it done. I'll pick the low hanging fruit to start off with - I think I can see Shitahara in the middle line: 下原 1 Quote
Shugyosha Posted January 27, 2024 Report Posted January 27, 2024 Bottom of the left hand column, perhaps the owner's name: ?泉景原 - ?sen or ?izumi Kagehara (but not 100% sure). Quote
SteveM Posted January 27, 2024 Report Posted January 27, 2024 壹千圓也 = 1000 yen 下原免 = Shimobaru-men (an address in Nagasaki) 3 1 Quote
Stephen Posted January 27, 2024 Report Posted January 27, 2024 Transportation tag, I've had a few usually just owners name and address. Have posted the nakago elsewhere? Looking good so far. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted January 28, 2024 Report Posted January 28, 2024 1000 yen was not an insignificant amount back then, it may be a sword with potential. 1 Quote
