Good question The saya It’s wooden black paint

I don’t know if the saya is original or replacement?  It has some splitting on  top front and bottom

It  appears it’s too thick for the saya maybe shrinkage cause this?

I was thinking of gluing the splitting but if you pinch the front top of the saya

It Won’t go in all the way

The blade itself is beautiful takayama sword

Any suggestions?

He is not the same smith. The smith name is Ishihara Masanao (石原正直).

Question is having a scabbard made by who?

If I could  find a navy one would be great but being a takayama sword would be next to impossible

Posted

Thanks to all for your help The new scabbard  won’t be the same as the Navy

Also more money would hurt the value when come time to sell

I might get it repaired however I’m not sure if this is an original navy saya ?

If it is splitting to accommodate the fat blade tip, it’s probably not the original one. The Takayama blades have a very fat tip so a saya and the liners would have to be shaped to fit it.

Thanks Bruce I know a takayama scabbard is next to impossible Is it worth it to have new scabbard made being this sword?

Or both - have a new saya made, but keep the original.

As to "worth"  - that is a personal question that only you can answer.  I restored my dad's mantetsu to original condition, and it was worth every penny.  But along with David's line of thought, if you are selling you have to start adding up your costs compared to what the going market rate is for such a sword.  You could quickly have more into the sword than you can sell it for.

I agree don’t want to put more than it’s worth Having a takayama sword is a nice collectible

And a mint blade However not worth a new scabbard  And not the same unless it’s a navy So probably best to  leave it as is

At least it still has a navy look to it and holds the sword

Thanks for your help
