There are about 50 swords,  mostly wakizashi and Tanto in the UK auction below. “A local private collection”.

Lot 400 onwards…..please trawl through a few of them.

what on earth has been done to nearly all the nakago?

looks like someone has added Mei and heavy artificial rust to “add value”

Some have decent fittings but overall they look a nightmare

Really interested to hear what you all think as I’ve never seen this done to nakago before.

Hi Colin,

I'd agree with you that the tangs have been messed with, perhaps by means of some chemical to add colour to them - they're too consistent in colour for natural rust to my mind. One blade has had an acid etched hamon added so this seems a plausible explanation.

If you have the patience it might be worth trying to pick out those blades with mei as they might be worth a punt and, from the signatures on a couple, I'd say that they were earlier than the descriptions suggest so there may be a few diamonds in the rough. That assumes that the owner didn't get creative with his chisel too. :freak:

Actually it looks like he might have added a date but no signature to one of the "katana". Also the blades are pretty much all buffed to a bright finish so whoever had them is/ was a complete arse. Wait for them to turn up at the Lanes Armoury with a load of fanciful descriptions. :-?

Hi John…..I reckon most of the Mei are wrong…..wrong size, wrong placement……dodgy calligraphy.
I think we have a diy restorer here😳😳😳

Knocked thousands off the value.

Never seen so many odd looking blades in one place before, its like someone accumulated every one of the oddballs discussed on here over the years.

Good luck sifting

Many of these could be chinese replicas added into original fittings, which could explain the poor Habaki, bizarre Nakago patina and added Mei/Nengo.

I think you may have something here.

@raaay Hi Ray…..looking again I think @PNSSHOGUN has nailed it on many of them…..fake Chinese blades hacked around to fit. Lots of them have the same apparent hamon. Heck of a lot of work for no return I think. However some do have decent f/k and menuki plus some nice saya. One even has super Jabara wrapping! If someone ( not me!!) bought them all very very cheaply and salvaged the real components they’d possibly come out ahead? (Or maybe not🙂) What a strange assembly. Be interesting to see…..

No, I shouldn't be so bitchy.
