War Time Posted December 31, 2023 Report Posted December 31, 2023 Greetings, Looking for translation on this sword. There are file marks on the tang. I see there are characters above the hole on the tang. The groove stops 3/4 along side the markings. I usually see markings begin below the hole. Any info would be helpful. Thanks Quote
Stephen Posted December 31, 2023 Report Posted December 31, 2023 Made by Munemichi/chika Not sure of top two Kanji Sanjo? Hard to look at because someone cleaned off the patina to get a better look very bad karma Quote
ROKUJURO Posted December 31, 2023 Report Posted December 31, 2023 Brian, signatures are chiselled and read vertically (tip upwards), so it would be easier to read if you positioned the image that way. Someone unfortunately ground the patina off the tang which is a big loss in value as it is an older blade - not war time! The tang looks to have been shortened at one time, so in your case I would not care too much about the MEI as it was probably added later (as Piers already noted, it reads SANJO MUNECHIKA, a very famous very early swordsmith of the HEIAN era).
