Bruce Pennington Posted December 25, 2023 Report Posted December 25, 2023 4 Body cut test by Yoshitoyo on a Kuniteru blade. I don't think I see a date, right? At auction HERE Quote
SteveM Posted December 25, 2023 Report Posted December 25, 2023 No date for the cutting test. The paper says the sword itself is circa Tenmei (1781-1789) 3 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 25, 2023 Author Report Posted December 25, 2023 Thanks Steve. Now I have 2 of his. The first one wasn't dated either and the blade was estimated to be mid 1650s. I realize cuts tests were often done sometime after a blade was made, maybe years, but 100 years seems a bit of a stretch. Any chance our NMB treasure @Markus Sesko is around? He literally wrote the book on the testers. Or if anyone else can give me an idea of when Yoshitoyo did his work? Quote
SteveM Posted December 25, 2023 Report Posted December 25, 2023 According to Guido's list, Yoshitoyo was active in Ansei (1855-1860). 2 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 25, 2023 Author Report Posted December 25, 2023 Great Steve, thanks! I'll amend the files. Quote
Markus Posted December 26, 2023 Report Posted December 26, 2023 No date, as Steve pointed out. What "worries" me a bit is that the cert quotes the gold inlaid cutting test under "mei" and not in a separate "kinzōgan-mei section"... 1 1 Quote
