I have these weird circular spots appearing on my blade. they are only visible if the blade is bone dry. when i apply oil, they are invisible.

originally i thought those are spots with dried oil, but nothing i did could remove them, now im a bit worried.

what could these spots be? they appear in a pretty even pattern

What you're looking at is probably tobiyaki: sections of hardened steel above the hamon, usually in small dots. They can be intentionally placed or isolated remnants of the hamon that has been polished away.

im gonna give it a good rub later today

What will you use to rub it with?  Be careful, the blade looks in good polish……it’s easy to make things worse and end up with a larger area that looks significantly different to the rest of the blade.

Go really light and easy. It would be safer to show better images first or better still show someone in hand for a second opinion. Believe me….its so easy to act first and regret later.

Question…..when you examine the blade….looking for nie/nioi/activity etc does anything show up around these spots? If they are tobiyaki I would expect to see maybe a nioi halo or some sort of indication that they are hardened areas.

Hello,

could you clarify the reason for the spots?

Only one question. If you oil the blade and look from different angles does the spots take on the oil or is the oil rejected on these spots? As I know "dry" or hardened oil will mostly reject further oil cover.

Regards Manfred
