MovieFactoryYT Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 I have these weird circular spots appearing on my blade. they are only visible if the blade is bone dry. when i apply oil, they are invisible. originally i thought those are spots with dried oil, but nothing i did could remove them, now im a bit worried. what could these spots be? they appear in a pretty even pattern Quote
ChrisW Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 What you're looking at is probably tobiyaki: sections of hardened steel above the hamon, usually in small dots. They can be intentionally placed or isolated remnants of the hamon that has been polished away. 2 Quote
Winchester Posted December 22, 2023 Report Posted December 22, 2023 Excessive oil usage for a duration; wiping off does not remove unless focused rubbing/wiping on a spot (my guess). Quote
MovieFactoryYT Posted December 26, 2023 Author Report Posted December 26, 2023 i hope thats it. im gonna give it a good rub later today and if nothing changes im just gonna accept that this is how it looks Quote

Be careful, the blade looks in good polish……it’s easy to make things worse and end up with a larger area that looks significantly different to the rest of the blade. Quote
Franco Posted December 26, 2023 Report Posted December 26, 2023 Possibly dried oil stains. You might talk to a polisher about them. Caution on forcible removal, it could make things only worse. Regards, Quote

It would be safer to show better images first or better still show someone in hand for a second opinion. Believe me….its so easy to act first and regret later. Question…..when you examine the blade….looking for nie/nioi/activity etc does anything show up around these spots? If they are tobiyaki I would expect to see maybe a nioi halo or some sort of indication that they are hardened areas. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted December 26, 2023 Report Posted December 26, 2023 Just a general remark: Oil does not "dry". 2 Quote
Manfred50 Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 Hello, could you clarify the reason for the spots? Only one question. If you oil the blade and look from different angles does the spots take on the oil or is the oil rejected on these spots? As I know "dry" or hardened oil will mostly reject further oil cover. Alex A Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 WD40 can stain steel, spots Cant see any machine oil causing white spots. Quote
Stephen Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 Old oil will dry had to clean off with acetone before Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 15, 2024 Report Posted January 15, 2024 Stephen, the hardening process of oil happens by polymerization. 1 Quote
