Good Morning,

My name is Matthew and I am a new collector. Thank you so much for allowing me to learn more about Japanese swords with this forum.  I have been interested in anything about Japan for a long time.

I bought this NCO sword a few weeks ago and have some questions that maybe some of you can answer.

The serial numbers on NCO swords are stamped on the side of the blade, either readable left to right or upside down, depending where it was made, correct?  On my NCO sword, the serial number is on the back of the blade and not on either side.  The serial number matched the one on the scabbard.  Does anyone know why it may be on the back of the blade rather than on the side?  Any information about this piece would be greatly appreciated.  I’ve spent some time trying to find the answer to this question, and thought this would be the best place to find out.

Respectfully,

Matthew

South Carolina.

Hello,  Thank you for the reply.  Well, that not good news.  I won this on GunBroker last month and paid a lot for it.  Hopefully, I can figure something out with the seller.

Thank you,

Matthew

Matthew,

What is the serial number on the scabbard throat? Looks like 100725, but could also just be mis-stamped.  Better pictures will help for a conclusive opinion. Although the initial photos looking concerning, it's hard to tell with pictures taken from so far away.

Not repro? Really :o

The nanako looks inverse. The menuki looks not correct.

The seppa is not that cherry blossom rim.

The saya has no black primer. Thin lacquerd green

The clipper is from that thin metal made. The habaki looks like the thin ones on the replicas.

The bo-hi looks strange.

Thank you all so much for all the replies.  The serial number is 100725, the second zero is smudged.  I took some additional pictures if order to help.  The blade is steel and almost has a cosmoline smell to it when I take it out.  The inside of the scabbard is aged and the wooden piece has seen better days. If it turns out to be a replica, perhaps its an older one?

Thank you all for the information.

Stamped on the mune? Never saw this. The blade looks like cromed and the shape is wrong.

For me it is repro, no doubt. Can't see anything right on this sword. When you look on a real one you see the quality difference immediatly.

Chris,

The point of what I am saying is that better quality pictures will allow for more specific comments and help the poster understand why it's fake. Providing pictures taken from five feet away with glare and poor focus are not helpful for receiving more specific insight.

A genuine one.

Thats not my picture. Its from facebook to show the details, i watch out first if a nco is genuine or not. If you know where to look on you see the difference instant. It is often very hard to compare the blades on bad pictures to see the other details, like stamps, numbers and so on. If these 3 details are wrong you must not look further. The fuchi can be changed. So the stamps are not allways a clear sign if its fake or not. If someone change all parts on a replica he paid a lot of money

Thanks for the added photos, Matthew.  Yes, it's definitely a reproduction.  All that Chris pointed out are things that are incorrect for a legit WWII Type 95.  I see the indented dimpling in the enlarged photo, and the bohi is wrong for a Tokyo 1st blade.

Well, I really appreciate all the feedback and information.  I've learned a lot from this forum. Do you all know of a reputable dealer or site where I can purchase an authentic one of these NCO swords? These are the ones I am most interested in.

Thank you again and all the best,

Matthew

Hello,  I was looking at this one.  It looks much better than the one I posted earlier, which I am still figuring out what to do with my $700 replica.  Anyways, if you have one you my want to sell to a new collector, please send me a message.  I've enjoyed learning about them with this forum.

Cheers,

Matthew
