Hello. I am trying to ID this Japanese sword that a family member inherited. They were told it was brought back from Japan in WWII. Thanks for any information on it!

Chris,

In the 1860s and '70s, Japan was starting to modernize their military according to Western standards.  As they adopted Western styled weapons, the "Artillery Sword" came to be.  Working from Jim Dawson's book, page 91, they made brass handled and wooden handled artillery swords from 1886 to 1893.  We see yours was made in 1892.  They were carried by "privates, NCOs, and artillery students..." at the time.

Thank you so much for identifying this sword. It might have been brought back from WWII Japan but it clearly predates WWII based on your research. My family member will be delighted with the ID and the history. Thanks again! Chris A.
