Could I thank members for their input and advice on the last piece that I posted . Can I ask for opinions on this piece . It is very showy and probably quite late . The blade is however shinto , of good quality and in good condition . I have little doubt that the blade is genuine although the horimono may be added later . What do members think this might be worth . To some extent I am asking so that the owner will get a feel for the accuracy of the prices that I gave him .

I'll take a stab at it. The blade looks to be in decent condition and if it were to be in normal samurai mounts, with no papers, would probably sell for $2000-2750 USD. The koshirae is nice, but not the highest quality...still nice though. The koshirae have been selling for around $2500-3000. Put the sword and koshirae together and I would estimate $5000-6000 USD. A similar item form a reputable US seller is posted below. Same seller had another tachi very similar to this that sold for the same price range of $5000-6000, so I am putting my estimate in-line with recent sales of similar items. As my father used to tell me "it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it". You may encounter someone who just has to have it, and pays much more, but uncertain times may severely hinder the sales price.

Wishing you all the best.

Nakago would be good to see, but so far its early Showa for export mounts with a blade which can be interesting but can be bakumutsu-meiji. Dragon and jewell is not horribly executed, but it tends to be a very late horimono, though not exclusively.

A 'souvenir' tachi fits the bill for me.  The (dremmelled?) go-san-kiri mon on the habaki is d-r-e-a-d-f-u-l.  I wouldn't want it at any price, so no valuation from me.

Sorry for the delay in posting these photos . The photo of the nakago doesn't do justice to this piece , it is a beautifully cut mei and the patination on the nakago is a lovely dark chocolate brown . The strong impression I got was that the blade was  was correct . I haven't checked the mei but the workmanship in the blade is excellent and I would be really surprised if it wasn't shoshin . The horimono may be added . Thanks for your comments to date

Yes Bazza , you may be right but what say you, as an occasional cataloguer, about its value . The blade itself has some real quality about it and I think you would like it .

Could be the camera angle but that horimono is definitely  added later buy a not so skilled person , maybe a showa era addition?? And looking at the tail looks like is cover a big flaw.

Price guess. 2500 to 3500 aud.

Thank you all for your opinions . It is interesting to see the range of views from 2500AU to 6000 US . There is a comparable piece on Jauce at the moment for 800,000 yen ( g1116642310 ). Of course it may sit there unsold for ages at that price . I said to the owner that if it was my sword I would be pretty disappointed if I couldn't get 5000 $AU for it and pretty happy if I got $7000 AU for it

The joys of pricing items...

Some offer full market retail opinions, and some suggest collector to collector prices.

But at the end of the day a item only sells for what a buyer wants.

And it sounds you want it.  What else are you getting from otto and mark??

I know hes got some swords hes asking 50k for, so out of interest alone, it would be a exercise in curiosity

I hope I didn't give the wrong impression . These are not pieces that I am wanting to buy . The owner asked for an opinion on values which I gave him . I posted here so he would get alternative views.
