I have been struggling with this one for a few days - so I thought I would ask for assistance.   This signature is on a post-war PX sword I purchased recently.  I will post more details on this fascinating sword in another discussion....

My best guess is   toyo - suke - saku.   However, I speculated that it might be toyo - wara - saku as that was where the swords were make in the aftermath of WWII post war Japan.   Wara  however did not fit from a kanji perspective:(

Thank you again!

John C.

Yes, John, Thanks!

Toyosuke - an undocumented smith, with some blades in WWII fittings, but mostly in souvenirs.  So, he was maybe late to start in the smithing game (@Jcstroud correct me if I'm wrong on that.)  This "79" is now one of the triplicates we have on the serial numbers.  For Toyosuke, we have, now,

How many of these do people  think were made/sold after the war ?

We don't know how many were sold, however we know the Army ordered about 8,800 and the order was eventually fulfilled. In addition, daggers were ordered but have yet to be positively identified. Check out Bruce Pennington's article on the Mysterious Naval Landing Sword in downloads.
