Hello

I am a new member and green as the grass. An old guy, 59, and finally got around to making my passion for edged weapons a reality. I've been facinated by Nihonto since forever and finally want to own one or two of my own so will be looking for a lot of advice from all you oldtimers out there. I guess a place to start would be to find out if there are any collectors here in Calgary. If there is, please contact me. Happy to be aboard and looking forward to owning my first Katana.

Cheers

Dwayne :thanks:

Hi Dwayne - Welcome to the wonderful world of all things Nihonto! As a newby myself I can assure you that this board will be a wealth of valuable information for you as you prepare to acquire your first sword. You may want to start by checking out the Articles section of this forum. Good luck in making nihonto connections in Calgary. I am certain there are collectors in your area.

Hi Dwayne,

I'm a new member myself. Welcome aboard, its a great site complete with experts, students and people like us. I have found the site to be of an incredible knowledge and opinion resource. Like you I have been bitten by the art form and am building on my knowledge base so that I will not be taken and might build a respectable collection. If I may, my recomendations to you would be: Do research first, don't jump (buy), until u know what u are buying. Then buy what makes your heart sing. Base your purchase on what an item is worth to you and not what you think you can get for it. Keep in mind its not the number of items its the item that prevails at least in terms of a collection. Beside this site you should google everything and you will find revelating info. Good luck and looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Ed

I appreciate your comments. My living room table is covered with books as we speak and I have more coming. My involvement in the oriental arts spans many years [from age 19] and only now have I begun to focus on nihonto. Unfortunately the world if full of "dealers" and sellers who cheat the unknowing and I hope my studies and association with groups like this will prevent that. I find that understanding the concept of Bushido [or trying to understand] is for me the first and important step into the world of nihonto. I know that my collection will begin one day when I have in my hands a katana or wakizashi that speaks to me in a way that few will understand. When will this happen? Who knows. Maybe tomorrow or maybe a year from now. First I must learn and study. My only regret is that I waited so long to begin the journey. It is unfortunate that there are so few collectors here in Calgary [only 2 that I know of]. Good luck with your studies and in your search for that first aquisition.
