Hi, has anyone got any information about the following items:

1) the markings on the saya, if they represent anything. Been told they could be secret clan markings.IMG_2482.thumb.jpeg.d9b8221ccc0f6b9cf84c6120ad1eceea.jpegIMG_2481.thumb.jpeg.c7e7fb120e9716c67729e686d6a7a06f.jpegIMG_2480.thumb.jpeg.08f3d231a3a983c72498827f31f32ec0.jpegIMG_2479.thumb.jpeg.0d40f33baca787f99ba2ee271706a8fb.jpegIMG_2478.thumb.jpeg.852f8549595c3a5441e36c7ed53cc3e1.jpegIMG_2477.thumb.jpeg.eb522daf050dbc94e2c179c653636b7f.jpeg

2) the tsuba, where it was made and in what period?

Hi, the image on the saya looks to be a water dragon, see tsuba below.

The tsuba you show possible late edo Aizu Shoami or Mito school. Possibly autumn flowers.

That's exactly what they want you to think. As Screwtape says, the Devil's best trick was convincing humankind he doesn't exist. :glee:

That's right we all have the code book.

This design was on a fuchi and a menuki. Rain dragon

The Kurikata looks like 'gama-hada' toad skin.

Colin I have 110 images of the 'rain dragon' design now - every one is slightly different - amazing so many utsushi were made, I am sure I have barely collected a tenth of what is still out there in private collections.

Maybe not secret clan markings, but sometimes individual talismanic markings such as Bonji or elements related to Shingon Mikkyo in the form of Grid markings or the 9 line Kuji markings on Kaga Habaki.
