Ray Singer Posted October 25, 2023 Report Posted October 25, 2023 The mei is Yasukuni. Unfortunately the upper portion of the date was intentionally obliterated. Best regards, Ray Quote
Kyle68 Posted October 25, 2023 Author Report Posted October 25, 2023 Thank you Mr Singer! Do you happen to know anything about this swordsmith? Is he well known? When he was born/died etc? I tried to look him up but couldn't find anything definitive.. Quote
Kyle68 Posted October 25, 2023 Author Report Posted October 25, 2023 any ideas on why they would intentionally remove the date? Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 25, 2023 Report Posted October 25, 2023 A date might be removed if someone wanted to make a more recent blade seem like an older one. Please show the entire date clearly (including the defaced sections). There were two 安国 documented in the Showa period. Quote

Ray, this is the sword I showed you a few months back that you believed to be Showa era and I agreed. The seller relisted it in the exact same way stating it was an older piece. The seller is also a knowledgeable person on NMB and it’s a shame he still is selling as an older blade. 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted October 25, 2023 Report Posted October 25, 2023 The blade is TACHI MEI, and I have the impression that the MEI and the date were not chiselled by the same hand. Quote
