Spartancrest Posted October 16, 2023 Report Posted October 16, 2023 Here is a tsuba in need of the skills required in the first post by Chris. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/355069937109 Wow just imagine cutting all those lines! 6 1 Quote

Grevedk Posted October 16, 2023 Report Posted October 16, 2023 I have a similar tsuba - bronze and probably not cast. A guess could be the Higo school and the Azuchi-Momoyama period (not certain and no papers), 0,45 x 7 x 7,6 cm, 128 g that could also need a “little repair” 😎 /Soren 4 1 Quote
DoTanuki yokai Posted October 16, 2023 Report Posted October 16, 2023 One of mine but I was so disgusted by the square shape that I abused this piece for experimenting. I did my “Greece style” engraving with a “Hakobori” chisel (don’t know if this is the right name) and would like to ask if this would be also done with a “Hakobori” if I want to inlay wire in it ? This is wood in the first picture by Vajo, right ? Quote

DoTanuki yokai Posted October 16, 2023 Report Posted October 16, 2023 Thanks Manuel, this answers even a lot of questions that I would have asked at a later point. Quote
Curran Posted October 17, 2023 Report Posted October 17, 2023 My one example. Had this for near 20 years now. 8 5 2 Quote

If it were bronze (very unusual in TSUBA) the plate would have been cast, but probably not inlaid with brass or gold. 1 Quote

Hi Jean @ROKUJURO, You are absolutely right - did the check, and it is magnetic (e.g. iron), and not bronze. Now I wonder why I didn’t check that before 😳 Apparently it has been coated in some kind of varnish which I think accounts for the slightly brownish look. Regarding the inlay I think it probably is brass. Not the prettiest Tsuba I have seen, but fascinating in its own right. 😎👍Thank you - I really enjoy tapping in to the combined knowledge of this board. All the best /Soren 2 Quote
