Josh Grossman Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 I bought this at an auction. Everything else in it was WWII--so thought this would be too--but the tsuba looks older (cast iron?) I'm thinking it might be Edo period? Doesn't look like there is any ray skin and I'd imagine someone butchered the tuska. Quote
dkirkpatrick Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 I’m sorry to say but I don’t believe this to be Japanese. The blade geometry and the tsuka -ito don’t look right nor does the fit of the fuchi. It’s possible this could be cobbled together somehow but I’m guessing the nakago will prove this to be non-nihonto. Hope I’m wrong. Doug 1 Quote
Cola Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 Not at all an expert but: Where's the hamon? Also in case you want to properly handle a nihonto at some point: Don't hold the blade with your bare hands, and also don't rest the cutting edge on the floor. Quote
Matsunoki Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 Can you do better images? seeing the nakago (tang) would help no end. Also the saya in better detail. Quote

Also the saya in better detail. Thanks. These were pictures from the auction. It is being shipped right now, so I can't put up better pictures but will if it's real. Quote
