I bought this at an auction. Everything else in it was WWII--so thought this would be too--but the tsuba looks older (cast iron?) I'm thinking it might be Edo period? Doesn't look like there is any ray skin and I'd imagine someone butchered the tuska.

I’m sorry to say but I don’t believe this to be Japanese.  The blade geometry and the tsuka -ito don’t look right nor does the fit of the fuchi.  It’s possible this could be cobbled together somehow but I’m guessing the nakago will prove this to be non-nihonto.  Hope I’m wrong.  Doug

Not at all an expert but: Where's the hamon?

Also in case you want to properly handle a nihonto at some point: Don't hold the blade with your bare hands, and also don't rest the cutting edge on the floor.

Thanks. These were pictures from the auction. It is being shipped right now, so I can't put up better pictures but will if it's real.
