Bruce Pennington Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Linseed oil and a deer antler as a scraper will remove most of the active rust. You can find them sliced in half, giving them a good scraping edge, at any pet store. Let the nihonto guys comment as to whether you should do that, though. If not, the active rust still needs to be stopped. Most recommend an oiled rag. Rub until you don't see red rust on the rag anymore. Quote
Bazza Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Hizen Kuni Yoshikane was a Shinshintou swordsmith ca 1865: https://www.samuraim...u-hozon-certificate/ Can we see more pics of the blade itself, please??? BaZZa. Quote
Stephen Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Before oil use a wood spoon or like item to tap nakago lightly to remove flake rust it will serve no good to oil over raised red active rust. 1 1 Quote
Grey Doffin Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 I wouldn't recommend linseed oil; it can gum up and leave a mess. Try light machine (sewing machine) oil instead. Grey 2 Quote
Stephen Posted October 3, 2023 Report Posted October 3, 2023 I seen in Translation forum the full nakago. You need to address the the large raised areas of rust asap. We want to preserve your sword You won't harm the nakago with wood tapping. It will flake off very easily. Your not beating it up just some good firm taps. Like Grey said linseed is a bit to thick ...please take time to work on the nakago. Is the rusty tsuba you posted about off this sword? A picture as requested needs to be shown before cleaning. Also a picture of blade as requested. Your getting help from members with decades of experience. We're here to help lets us do so. 1 Quote
Brian Posted October 3, 2023 Report Posted October 3, 2023 As Stephen mentioned. The only thing I would change, is I would put a piece of material over the nakago, like an old t-shirt. Then tap away at the thick rusted parts like he said with a piece of wood or a wooden spoon. The larger rust will flake off. Once you have all the large pieces off, you can focus on areas with ivory or bone chips, and then a little oil to protect once most of it is gone. No major force, just light taps and scrapes. Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 If you are using Linseed oil, be very careful with the rag 1 Quote
